A Heartwarming Transformation: Restoring an Elderly Lady’s Patio

Before Pressure Washing

Last Thursday afternoon, I received a call from a lovely elderly lady enquiring about cleaning her driveway. During our phone conversation, I mentioned that I was already working in her area and could provide a quote for her patio cleaning later that day. She agreed, and upon arriving at her property, I was warmly greeted as she showed me her patio.

She explained that it hadn’t been cleaned in over 15 years. Although weedkiller had been used, the block paving had never undergone a proper cleaning. As a result, the blocks had a very dark appearance and were heavily covered in moss. After assessing the condition, I provided her with a quote, and she immediately decided to proceed, requesting that the work be done as soon as possible.

I offered to complete the job the next day, as my schedule allowed, and she was delighted. Early Friday morning, I arrived on-site to begin the transformation. Cleaning this type of patio required a three-step process:

  1. Pressure Washing
The first step was to use industrial-grade pressure washing to remove dirt, moss, algae, and any other stubborn grime that had accumulated over the years. This revealed the hidden beauty of the block paving underneath the layers of discolouration.

  2. Detergent Treatment
Next, I applied a professional cleaning detergent to the surface. This step not only enhanced the cleaning process but also ensured that any remaining moss or algae was completely eradicated.

A Patio Ready for Summer BBQs – A Block Paving Transformation

One afternoon, I received a call from a lovely lady who needed her block-paved patio cleaned urgently. She explained that it was in terrible condition, covered in dirt and stains, and needed a thorough cleaning to restore its original look.

After scheduling an appointment, I arrived the next morning to assess the area and provide a quote. Once she saw the price, she immediately asked me to start as soon as possible. Luckily, I had availability, so I was able to begin the work that very same day.

The following video shows the cleaning process in action.

The Cleaning Process

Since the space was quite narrow, I wasn’t able to use my Flat Surface Cleaner. However, due to the heavy dirt buildup, I had to use the TurboFly nozzle to remove the stubborn stains effectively.

The Practical Side of Sandstone Cleaning

A Chain of Referrals

One Tuesday afternoon, my phone rang, and a kind voice on the other end explained they were looking to have their patio cleaned. We scheduled an appointment for a quote later that same afternoon. Upon arrival, I met the customer, who wanted their sandstone patio cleaned. The patio was located in a heavily wooded area, with a large pine tree nearby, making it prone to getting dirty quickly. As a result, the surface requires annual cleaning.

After providing the quotation, the customer immediately decided to proceed with the service, and we scheduled the job for the following week, in the afternoon. What follows is a detailed account of the process and the surprising outcome—so be sure to read until the end!

When the day of the job arrived, I was fortunate to work in beautiful, sunny weather. Sandstone can be a tricky surface to clean, but with the right expertise, it’s possible to achieve stunning results without causing any damage. For those who prefer watching rather than reading, I’ve included a video of the cleaning process—but for readers, here’s the full breakdown.

Step 1: High-Pressure Cleaning

I began with industrial-grade pressure washing to remove discolouration, moss, and grass, especially in the shadier areas where dirt had accumulated most. During this step, I ensured that the surface was cleaned to a high standard while taking care to preserve its integrity.

Step 2: Eco-Friendly Cleaning Solution

Next, I applied a special eco-friendly cleaning solution. This was particularly important because the customer has two dogs who enjoy sunbathing on the patio. Using a pet-safe product ensured their safety while still achieving a pristine result.

Pressure Washing A to Z – Everything You Need to Know

Dirty block paving Patio Before Cleaning

When talking to customers, I often hear the same concerns about pressure washing. Some people believe it will damage their surfaces, harm their plants, or waste too much water. Others think they can achieve the same results with a small pressure washer from a hardware store. There are many myths surrounding professional pressure washing, and in this blog post, I want to clear them up once and for all.

So, let’s go through them one by one.

1. "Pressure washing will damage my surface."

Every surface is different, and that’s exactly why expertise and the right equipment are so important. A block-paved driveway, where weeds, moss, and grime have settled between the joints, requires a completely different cleaning approach than a resin-coated surface. But that doesn’t mean either is impossible to clean. It’s simply a matter of using the right tools and techniques.

Since I do this for a living, I have everything needed to restore surfaces without causing damage. I’ve worked with all types of materials, and there isn’t a surface I haven’t cleaned before.

2. "Pressure washing will harm my plants."

This is a common concern, but the reality is that in most cases, there is no noticeable damage to plants. In very rare instances, the edges of grass or shrubs might get slightly affected, but even if that happens, they bounce back within a week.
