Pressure Washing A to Z – Everything You Need to Know
When talking to customers, I often hear the same concerns about pressure washing. Some people believe it will damage their surfaces, harm their plants, or waste too much water. Others think they can achieve the same results with a small pressure washer from a hardware store. There are many myths surrounding professional pressure washing, and in this blog post, I want to clear them up once and for all.
So, let’s go through them one by one.
1. "Pressure washing will damage my surface."
Every surface is different, and that’s exactly why expertise and the right equipment are so important. A block-paved driveway, where weeds, moss, and grime have settled between the joints, requires a completely different cleaning approach than a resin-coated surface. But that doesn’t mean either is impossible to clean. It’s simply a matter of using the right tools and techniques.
Since I do this for a living, I have everything needed to restore surfaces without causing damage. I’ve worked with all types of materials, and there isn’t a surface I haven’t cleaned before.
2. "Pressure washing will harm my plants."
This is a common concern, but the reality is that in most cases, there is no noticeable damage to plants. In very rare instances, the edges of grass or shrubs might get slightly affected, but even if that happens, they bounce back within a week.
More importantly, I use special biodegradable cleaning solutions that are designed to be safe for plants. These professional detergents require a special licence to purchase, which I have. This allows me to clean surfaces effectively while keeping the surrounding greenery completely safe.
3. "Pressure washing wastes a lot of water."
A lot of people think pressure washing requires an enormous amount of water, but this is not true. I use high pressure, not high water volume. In fact, I don’t use any more water than what you’d need to wash a car.
Of course, every surface is different, and the level of dirt plays a role, but on average, just three litres of water per square metre is needed. Pressure washing is actually one of the most water-efficient ways to clean large areas.
4. "My windows will get dirty."
It’s true that when I clean a surface, the dirt has to go somewhere, and sometimes that means a bit of splashback onto windows. However, this is not something customers need to worry about because once the job is done, I always rinse down the windows to leave them spotless.
5. "The drains will get blocked."
If a drain wasn’t blocked before, it won’t suddenly clog up just because I’ve cleaned a driveway or patio. I take care to collect all the moss, weeds, and dirt in a special fabric bag, meaning nothing is left to wash away into the drainage system.
6. "Pressure washing involves harmful chemicals."
People often worry about chemicals, and I understand why. But the products I use are professional-grade, meaning they are both powerful and safe. They require a special licence to buy, which I have, and they are designed to be tough on dirt while being completely safe for the environment.
My expertise allows me to apply these solutions effectively, ensuring excellent results without any risk to people, pets, or plants.
7. "The surface will get dirty again in no time."
This depends on a few factors, such as the weather, how many trees are nearby, and what type of dirt tends to build up. For example, pine trees drop a lot of debris that can make a surface dirty faster. But generally speaking, a properly cleaned surface stays in good condition for about a year.
Most of my customers book an annual clean, while others find that their surfaces stay fresh for even longer.
8. "I can do the same job with my Karcher pressure washer."
This is one of the biggest myths out there. Many people – including some new business owners – believe that a small pressure washer from a hardware store can achieve professional results. Unfortunately, that’s simply not the case.
A household Karcher pressure washer typically operates at 100 bar and delivers 5 litres of water per minute. The machines I use operate at 250 bar with a 25-litre-per-minute flow rate. This means five times the power and a much more effective clean.
There’s a reason why professional pressure washing companies invest tens of thousands of pounds in their equipment. Simply put, the results speak for themselves.
Final Thoughts
Pressure washing is a fast, efficient, and safe way to restore outdoor surfaces. It doesn’t damage materials, won’t harm plants, doesn’t waste water, and doesn’t involve harmful chemicals. And while DIY machines might seem like an easy alternative, they just don’t compare to professional equipment.
